Curriculum

Our classroom is a warm, caring, multi-age community where children can make friends in a calm setting, develop their sense of independence, strengthen their ability to concentrate, and maintain their sense of wonder about the world.

Using specially constructed hands-on manipulative materials, The Learning Curve Preschool Curriculum covers several academic areas that are developmentally appropriate for the 3-5 year old child.

Our activities and routines are planned with a child’s sensitive periods and internal drives in mind. Children are allowed and encouraged to follow their inner voice. There are very few group activities in which all children are expected to perform in an identical manner. Children work independently at activities of their own choosing. Each TLCP activity is carefully designed with internal controls of error so the need for adult supervision and correction becomes minimal. This allows the children to develop at their own pace; it allows them to develop concentration, self-discipline, self-motivation and self-confidence.

Within a context of self-motivation and self-discipline, children are presented activities in the following major curriculum areas:

Sensorial

With the unique Montessori Sensorial materials, children work on such skills as visual and auditory discrimination which are necessary for future academic work. Sensorial Work is a great foundation to the Mathematics curriculum.

Music and Art

Gross motor development opportunities are provided daily both as part of a structured program and individual free choice throughout the day. Informal and formal music education occurs through daily singing, playing a variety of music CDs, introduction to instruments, exploration of sound etc.  Children enjoy various creative and expressive art activities every day.

Practical Life

Practical Life activities help children develop daily life skills such as refining their motor skills and caring for themselves and their surroundings.  The children also learn communication and conflict resolution skills.

Language

Our language curriculum uses a systematic approach to writing and reading that feeds the child’s innate excitement for and desire to communicate.  We spend quality time on the development of pre-literacy and vocabulary in their first year. This helps the children as they progress to writing and reading in kindergarten and beyond.

The remarkable Montessori math materials not only teach basic counting skills but bring such abstract concepts as the decimal system, squaring, cubing, and geometry into the realm of the preschool mind.

Cultural

The science and geography activities that a child finds in our classroom are designed to “put the world in the palm of his hand”.  Children work with maps, learn about various cultures around the world, celebrate similarities and differences, and ponder the beauty of the natural world.
